Jeera and Pepper Rasam/Saaru

This is one of my favorite recipes. It goes well with hot rice. You can consume this as soup also. When you have common cold and do not feel like eating anything, try this Rasam with hot rice. You will love it. :-)

Ingredients
Pepper powder - 1/2 spoon Or Pepper seeds - 8 to 10 (You can increase the quantity if you want Rasam to be more hot)
Cumin powder - 1/2 spoon Or Whole Cumin seeds - 1/2 spoon
Turmeric powder - a pinch
Tamarind - 1/4 inch
Jaggery - 1/4 inch (Optional)
Water - 2 cups medium sized
Salt
Garlic cloves - 8 to 10
Currly leaves - 5 to 6
Mustard seeds - 1 spoon
Oil - 1 spoon (Coconut oil preferred)

Method

1. Put Pepper powder, Jeera/Cumin powder, Turmeric powder, Tamarind and Jaggery in a vessel and add water. Boil the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes.
If you are using whole Pepper and Cumin, then crush them before and then mix with other ingredients.

2. When it reaches the boiling point, add Salt according to taste and boil for 2 minutes. Switch off the flame.

3. In a pan, heat oil and add Garlic cloves. Fry them until they change color slightly. Then add Curry leaves and Mustard seeds. When Mustard splutters, add it to the boiled liquid.
Hot Pepper and Jeera Rasam is ready.
